What happens when you are experiencing fear?

Your nervous system goes on-line and your body starts to go into three different arousal zones.

Fear is an incredibly powerful emotion, one that every one of us has experienced. Perhaps you have many stories of times when fear gripped you. For me, a night when my son unexpectedly jumped out from the porch created a powerful moment of fear. It left me surprised, not only by his sudden appearance but by my own reaction of complete shutdown. Such experiences remind us of fear's deep connection with our survival instincts, which are governed by our nervous system.


Fear and the Nervous System

Understanding fear through the lens of the nervous system can clarify why we react the way we do. Our body's fight, flight, or freeze responses are natural instincts designed to protect us. Imagine our ancestors as hunters and gatherers, hearing a rustling in the bushes—a possible threat nearby. The brain releases adrenaline and cortisol, prompting immediate action: fight or flee.

While these surges are crucial, they cannot sustain indefinitely, often peaking around the 10 to 15-minute mark before tapering off. This physiological change is why panic attacks, although terrifying, do not last forever.

The Three Zones of the Nervous System

The science of fear involves recognizing the three zones of our nervous system:


1. Hyper-Arousal Zone (Red Zone):

This is the top level, where you're likely to experience fight or flight mode. You might feel highly reactive, defensive, or plagued by intrusive thoughts. Physically, this might manifest as tension and shaking.

2. Window of Tolerance (Green Zone):

Often referred to as the ventral vagal state, this is considered the balanced middle ground. Here, you are socially engaged and empathetic, able to learn and adapt to situations effectively. Stress and reactions align with the situation's complexity.

3. Hypo-Arousal Zone (Blue Zone):

The third zone represents shutdown in response to overwhelming stress. In this state, you might feel numb or disconnected—mistakenly associating these feelings with depression.

Techniques to Regulate Your Nervous System

Awareness of these zones allows you to navigate back to the green zone—the window of tolerance. Here are strategies for each zone:

  • Hyper-Arousal Management:

    Activities matching the heightened energy can help, like listening to music with deep bass or engaging in physical activities that allow release. A hot or cold shower may also help recalibrate your system.

  • Hypo-Arousal Management:

    Gentle movements or self-embraces can help coax your nervous system back online. Subtle stimuli like soft music and mindful practices like gratitude can be beneficial too.


Mind-Body Connection and Self-Storytelling

Deep belly breathing can enhance this regulation by sending calming signals through the vagus nerve. This nerve, one of the body’s longest, helps communicate the mind’s calming intent to the body. Moreover, be mindful of self-talk and the stories you tell yourself. If anxieties around parenthood or work creep in, challenge those narratives by assessing their evidence. Align your internal dialogue with positive truths to help stabilize your emotional state.

Fear connects intricately to our survival-driven nervous system. Recognizing the various zones your nervous system inhabits allows for practical interventions tailored to guide you back to a state of balance and control.
