Very excited to welcome another guest today. I have Sabrina Johnson, who is the podcast host of Sabrina Scents and she's a hypnotherapist and you've got . A few other tricks up your sleeve. Sabrina, do you mind to tell the audience a little bit more about you and your background?
Sabrina Johnson: Absolutely. And thank you, Erin, for inviting me on your podcast. I'm super excited to be here. Yes. I'm an NLP and hypnosis mindset coach. basically what that means is I guide individuals like you on a journey of self discovery, empowering them to overcome any limiting beliefs that they have.
I encourage them to achieve their goal. And really just live a life filled with purpose, intent, and joy. the way that I do that is by using guided hypnosis. I have a few [00:02:00] techniques. Through hypnosis that allows me to reach an individual's subconscious mind.
That's where all of their limiting beliefs, their poor behaviors, for lack of a better way of explaining it. Actions or. just any kind of internal negative dialogue. I help them to reprogram that so that they can actually achieve success in whatever they set out to do.
Erin H. Davis: Wow. That's really incredible.
And I'm super glad we're talking today because I've always been fascinated by hypnosis and honestly never had the opportunity to talk to someone who practices this kind of work. So have you ever come across someone who has OCD and used hypnosis as a remedy or a technique?
Sabrina Johnson: That's a really great question. I have not come across individual with OCD, but I have worked with individuals that have had extreme anxiety and fears that could [00:03:00] potentially embody some of the symptoms that somebody with OCD would experience.
Erin H. Davis: Yeah. Do you have any examples of the type of fears they were dealing with?
Sabrina Johnson: Oh, yes. There's so many different examples I could give you, but one of the most, impactful is a woman I've worked with who had extreme resentment. her resentment stemmed from the lack of trust from all of the individuals in her life who held back from her that her husband of 15 years was cheating on her.
Erin H. Davis: Oh.
Sabrina Johnson: So she did have a lot of anxiety surrounding that situation because of course here she is with her husband still living with her husband, by the way, she was trying to work through it with him.
on top of that, trying to work through it with her close friends, her parents and other family members, like her brother, who didn't say anything, even though they knew [00:04:00] about what was going on.
Erin H. Davis: Oh my gosh. I think this is a great example because so many couples experience heartaches like this, or they worry about having a situation like this.
How come the family never came forward to tell her? That's a good question.
Sabrina Johnson: I think they just didn't feel it was their place to tell her it was her husband's responsibility to come forward and tell her himself. And I think that's what they wanted, because they didn't want to be the individual to hurt her.
Erin H. Davis: how did she find out in general? She
Sabrina Johnson: did find out because she tapped into her intuition and used a little bit of common sense and digging. Noticed he was getting increased messages during the evening hours, usually when they would be spending time together.
she'd notice he would get up, grab his phone, go in the other room, and then after a few minutes, come back out and sit with her. But she kept seeing those [00:05:00] patterns where he would get up at specific times. then it became not just at this time, but now he's getting up at this time until it came to a point where he was only spending 30 minutes with her out of a four hour time period in the evening.
Erin H. Davis: she
Sabrina Johnson: started digging, looking through the phone messages. she didn't use his actual phone, but she scrolled through their services On the webpage brought up Verizon or whatever carrier it was to view who he was talking to
Erin H. Davis: the phone history.
Sabrina Johnson: And that's how she started to find out that there was somebody else he was talking to.
Erin H. Davis: So she comes to you and she's bitter and resentful. How do you do the hypnosis in those? for the first session, it's really just uncovering and unpacking all of those negative feelings, hypnosis does vary per individual based on how long they have had specific beliefs [00:06:00] that have been ingrained into their subconscious.
Sabrina Johnson: and how open and receptive they are to hypnotic suggestion.
Erin H. Davis: Yeah, that's interesting because I've heard that some people are more susceptible than others.
Sabrina Johnson: So there's a few techniques that I use during our hypnosis first session to determine how susceptible she is to being induced into a hypnotic state.
Thankfully, she was an individual that was fairly easy to get into a relaxed hypnotic state.
Erin H. Davis: And
Sabrina Johnson: for those that don't know, hypnosis, is. a deeper form of relaxation, similar to meditation.
Erin H. Davis: Oh, okay.
Sabrina Johnson: Your brain vibrates on different frequencies at different levels.
Erin H. Davis: And
Sabrina Johnson: those different vibration frequencies is where your meditative state lies.
It's where your sleep state lies and the kind of in between.
[00:07:00] So that's all hypnosis is. with her first session, she was very open. She was very open in admitting what she believes were holding her back. It was fairly easy to unpack some of the things that she was going through. for our first session, she cried the entire hypnosis session.
Erin H. Davis: Yeah.
Sabrina Johnson: And it was an hour.
Erin H. Davis: Yeah,
Sabrina Johnson: that is a lot of emotion that she was being off her shoulders because her whole family knew she was going through this. So she felt she didn't have a support system. She didn't have anybody close to her that she could talk to about the situation. And that first session, it was extremely productive.
Because she was finally able after 14 years to let it all out. She was actually an individual that was really good after three sessions.
Erin H. Davis: amazing.
Sabrina Johnson: And now [00:08:00] she is thriving. She is fitness famous.
Erin H. Davis: Oh, that's awesome. So it's a way to unlock what's happening in the subconscious, which is below our awareness.
Sabrina Johnson: Yes.
And what do you do with it? Yeah, that's a great way to look at it. So once we get into the subconscious and we find out what are some of those beliefs that you have your internal dialogue is telling yourself. With her, it was, I'm not good enough.
I do not deserve to be loved. So it's interesting that her husband was cheating on her. She had this belief. And so her husband cheating on her reaffirmed this belief.
Erin H. Davis: The wrong kind of reinforcement.
Sabrina Johnson: Exactly.
Erin H. Davis: So
Sabrina Johnson: to her, his cheating on her was proof that belief was true, which makes it a little bit more challenging to change.
But [00:09:00] after our first session, I sent her home with a 21 day recording. It's a recording that reframes those beliefs and it's a sleep hypnosis. as she's sleeping, she listens to this positive dialogue that helps to take away those negative reinforcements and replace it with positive reinforcements.
Erin H. Davis: Wow, that's incredible.
Sabrina Johnson: And that's just one technique that we use to help to improve the internal dialogue. It's a combination of a couple of different things that we do alongside of it. We have what's called anchoring. We have what's called reframing. We have guided relaxation. We have releasing limiting patterns.
that's basically what we do.
Yeah. And so Sabrina, how did you get into this kind of work? So I actually started out in my career in [00:10:00] customer experience and sales.
.
Sabrina Johnson: I worked in customer experience and sales for 20 years I'm talking, I was 15 when I started in customer experience and then got into sales .
Erin H. Davis: Oh my goodness.
Sabrina Johnson: It was what I knew what I was comfortable with. So when I got into a career in sales, I figured that would be my natural course of action. Even though I had attempted to go to college, a few events in my life prevented me from completing it.
I had a house fire. I lost my house. I was living in a completely different state, which was Kentucky at the time. I live in New York now when the fire happened, I lost everything.
We barely had any savings. My husband and I, in our account, it was depleted. We also had a six month old son. So we were essentially forced to move back home and live with family. When I was in college, I was in college for physical [00:11:00] therapy. I was halfway through it
None of my medical credits or significant chemistry courses or advanced math courses, would transfer.
Oh my gosh. Learning that I had to start over. I was like, at this point I just need to make money. So I went back into sales.
Erin H. Davis: Huh.
Sabrina Johnson: From there, I also worked to learn more about the mindset after working another part time job with individuals that had different mental disorders.
So I learned a lot at that time from these individuals, how they had such a positive outlook on life, even though everything that they were doing in life was completely different than you or I would do,
through that process, it really got me intrigued to learn more about the mind.
Some of the things that they could do were just incredible because when they really believed that they could do something,
Erin H. Davis: you can
Sabrina Johnson: tell them differently. They were going to do it. And yeah. Long [00:12:00] story short, it inspired me to get into what I'm doing now because. I just wanted to learn more about the brain.
It was a fascinating subject.
Erin H. Davis: And with the hypnosis, is that an extra certification training? What's that process?
Sabrina Johnson: So there's many different forms of hypnosis trainings. Anybody who is interested in getting into hypnosis needs to really Review the different universities and colleges that are available to them
Erin H. Davis: to complete
Sabrina Johnson: this degree.
You can actually log on to youtome. Which is a it's similar to Coursera where You can get certifications and you can get a couple of different certifications in hypnosis. However, individuals that go through Udemy to get this certification, they're not going to get all of the information to be able to consistently teach or instruct their clients through guided [00:13:00] hypnosis effectively.
And what they don't tell you when you get these certifications is that you're only usually learning one form of hypnosis and there are several different forms.
Erin H. Davis: Oh,
Sabrina Johnson: wow.
Erin H. Davis: So you really got to do your research.
Sabrina Johnson: You really do. Otherwise you're wasting money because you will have to go back to school to get the appropriate degree to be able to legally coach through hypnosis.
Erin H. Davis: Oh, wow. So there are like some boundaries or regulations around even providing hypnosis.
Sabrina Johnson: There are a few.
Erin H. Davis: Oh, okay.
Sabrina Johnson: Hypnosis is an unregulated practice.
Erin H. Davis: Yeah,
Sabrina Johnson: anybody can practice hypnosis without a degree, but there are specific guidelines you have to follow To make it effective and for it to actually work for your clients.
Erin H. Davis: I highly recommend looking into the American hypnosis association.
Sabrina Johnson:
They are the [00:14:00] governing body for hypnosis and they will give you all of the information that you need about certification.
Erin H. Davis: And so Sabrina, do you have any words of wisdom or advice for those who are skeptical about hypnosis, but they likely have some blocks or some things they need to work through?
Sabrina Johnson: I always tell people who are skeptical, let's just start with a conversation and see how that goes.
Because in the conversation, All we're going to do is discuss some of your specific goals, some of the challenges that you've encountered to reaching those goals, and there's a lot that you'll learn. Just through that conversation about hypnosis and how powerful it can actually be. It is not the staged hypnosis picture that everybody likes to give us.
Cause it reminds me of they're dangling a watch from side to side and then they tell you to act like a chicken or [00:15:00] something. When you're guided towards hypnosis, you remain fully conscious. You're aware throughout the entire process. It is simply a deeply relaxed state where we're able to reach your subconscious because you're more receptive to positive change.
Erin H. Davis: Sabrina, I very much appreciate your time and being here today. Where can the audience connect with you?
Sabrina Johnson: So you can find me on LinkedIn. You can also find me on my website, which is next win LLC, because I always say I like.
To help people get their next win in life, .
Erin H. Davis: Aw, that's so nice. and right now your podcast is hosted on YouTube, right?
Sabrina Johnson: Yes. I also have a podcast called Sabrina Sense, where I try to bring a little bit of common sense to the world of work.
Erin H. Davis: Yeah.
What's your YouTube handle?
Sabrina Johnson: It's Sabrina Sense podcast. And I'll share all the details for your audience as well.
Erin H. Davis: Thank you [00:16:00] again for being here. I very much appreciate the conversation.
